Dream of Wings
This book is an essential history of the final stages of aviation development that immediately preceded the Wright Brothers historic flights of December 1903. Coupled with another of Crouch's books - The Bishop's Boys: A Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright - you have a comprehensive history of aviation's early days in the United States.
The book discusses Octave Chanute, Samuel Pierpont Langley, Otto Lilienthal, Augustus Herring, and the Wright Brothers - their individual accomplishments and their interactions, both good and bad.
The author, Tom Crouch, is a prolific and excellent aviation historian and this book is certainly recommended for aviation historians and historians in general.
