Handbook of Positive Behavior Support
After having read a number of books from Oxford's A Very Short Introduction series, I've found them to be quite good.
The Renaissance: A Very Short Introduction, I consider to be an exception. Brotten is a clear writer, but the organization of the material in each chapter leaves one wondering how it is salient in the overall historical context. That is not to say the book is not organized well--it is. But insofar as each chapter is presented, after reading it you are left feeling like the information is too loosely connected. There is an emphasis on art history and cartography, as well as exploration, which is the launching pad for most of Brotten's explanations about social attitudes and economic and political status.
Brotten also trys hard to make the study of the Renaissance an important factor for us post 9/11 readers. I think we've all grown weary of this revisionist drivel.
Brotten also makes some dubious claims, states what is factual but not accurate, and emphasizes things that are hardly the sort of thing the general reader, with no frame of reference for the Renaissance, needs to learn.
There are better introductions to the renaissance than this one, so spend the extra $4.50 and get a more comprehensive account.
If you know very little about the Renaissance (which I've found to be the case with most people), you'll certainly learn from this book and you'll be disabused of some of the typically false notions accepted about the Renaissance (for instance, that is was "an Italian thang"), but it is weak on significant aspects of the period, including the relation of humanism to philosophy, significant wars and their political ramifications, Papal machinations, and the plague and its wake; Brotten also gives some rather perfunctory treatments of the differences between scholasticism and humanism, which are fairly misleading.
The book is only about 140 pages or so, so it's a very quick read. Brotten provides a goodly portion of illustrations, including great art works and period maps. The reproductions of the art works are fine enough for the small size format of this series, but doesn't work so well for the maps, which is too bad because they are really fascinating.
