Little does 16-year-old Sami Ames know what she’s in for when she and her mother head to Scotland to help their cousins save MacKensie Manor. Sami feels like she’s landed in a medieval time warp. There’s no electricity, no running water, or hair conditioner! But Sami joins in the challenges of daily peasant life in order to get MacKensie Manor up and running as a working farm tourist attraction. She can’t imagine people paying to make soap, dye wool, or milk cows. What’s worse, a ghost has invaded her room. Sami can’t figure out cousin Fiona, who obsesses over an ancient family feud with the McClintoggs, but Sami’s thrilled when she has a close encounter with a hot Scot. Too bad it’s Adan McClintogg!
Sami didn't even know she had Scottish relatives, but now she's off to spend her summer in Scotland. She and her mother, a romance writer who frequently sets her stories in the Highlands, will live with distant relatives and help them prepare their homestead to be a working farm for tourists. No one mentioned this renovation project to Sami prior to the trip, and she is surprised to see that she won't be spending her summer in a castle, like she'd pictured. Instead, she and mother are roughing it in a small cottage with no electricity and no shower. Sami is matched up with Fiona, who initially seems like Sami's complete opposite. Together, they work to make the farm an authentic medieval reenactment site and serve as guinea pigs for all the activities on the farm. Through Fiona, Sami learns of the longstanding clan war, over land and money, between the MacKensies (Sami and Fiona's family) and the McClintoggs. When Sami develops a serious crush on Adan, she must tread carefully, as he's a McClintogg. Sami's summer further surprises her when a ghost who haunts the MacKensie land contacts her to clear up this whole mess between the clans. Though the story lacks any real depth, the short chapters and packed plot will keep readers interested. The setting of Scotland and the unusual background of a working medieval farm make this book stand out. There is a little something for everyone here, with romance, ghosts, strained family dynamics, and friendship. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor
