PRINCESS BELLA HAS been snatched from her secret garden by a terrifying monster, leaving behind nothing but a glittering golden ball. Not even the bravest knights in the kingdom can save her from the huge, dark, firebreathing creature with enormous wings, a great swishing tail, and deadly claws. But clumsy Ned, the stable boy, is determined to succeed where the gallant knights have failed. Can he defeat the dragon and get the girl? Or will he let the chance to become a hero slip through his butterfingers? Join our unlikely hero and his animal friends on their daring quest across the plain, through the woods, and into the mountains to find out. . . .

Children's Literature

It is a refreshing change now-a-days to read a current fairytale similar in style to the old tales written years ago. This is a wonderful fantasy to read as a first time novel for children. Beautifully descriptive, the reader is immediately drawn into the scene and time. The plot is fairly simple with a poor stable boy, handsome knights, a princess captured by a fearsome dragon, and a host of animals all helping in the rescue. But the way it is all presented works extremely well and is engaging to read and an easy page-turner. The main character of the story named Butterfingers is a clumsy stable boy who daydreams of becoming a hero one day for the princess that occupies his thoughts constantly. Naturally the opportunity arises when a huge black cloud appears in the guise of a dragon and captures the princess. When the knights sent to rescue her do not return, the young stable boy makes it his mission to find the princess. Along with a host of interesting and charming creatures he meets along the way who are willing to be of help, the young boy finally develops a plan. The story is nicely put together and the ending, though predictable, is well done. My only complaint is that some of the text blends in with the gray illustrations of tree branches in the background, making a few of the pages harder to read. Reviewer: Joan Elste
