The Viaduct
It's the early 70's in Harlem. The Harlem of recently returned Vietnam vets, hustlers, pimps, jazz clubs and homey restaurants. There's a mugging gone wrong and a kidnapping. Will the child be found in time? Whose side is the police on? It all adds up to a tense thriller. It's a pretty standard thriller as thrillers go. What is unique about the story is how the author captured the time and place. It is a Harlem that no longer exists. Everyone knows each other and you have your choice of un-gentrified lounges and clubs to spend the evening. I recommend the book, but felt the ending was rushed. And how the " villains" were dealt with was disappointing. I wanted revenge!
Give it a try and feel what Harlem was like in the 70's.
