The Beginning and the End
A book about death. Perhaps because I'm dealing with a death in the family currently I found this story to be quite poignant. I particularly love Mahfouz's way of telling stories and revealing the characters subtly. I put him on the shelf with authors like Morrison, Marquez, and Cisneros -all very similar story tellers who bring you into a fantasy that almost seems as if you've lived it personally.
The quote towards the end about death being more appealing than hope really resonated with me.
