When Arthur and his classmates head back to school, they're asked to write about their summer vacation. But when Arthur hears the exciting things his friends have done, Arthur feels he must make up a better story of his own. Will Arthur tell the whole class a lie or will he actually tell the truth?

Children's Literature

Returning to school in the fall, Arthur is not pleased to be asked to write about what he did over summer vacation. All of his friends and classmates seem to have had exciting summer vacations, but Arthur did not go anywhere special. In an effort to write a good report, Arthur fabricates a tale of saving his sister from a big wave, an octopus, and a shark while surfing in the ocean. Unfortunately, his sister hears him reading the tale aloud, and she chastises him for telling a fib. Arthur's conscience gets the better of him. When he reads his report in class, he chooses to tell the truth. Instead of his ocean tale, Arthur talks about getting a new baby sister during the summer! The report is both interesting and exciting to his classmates and his teacher. This book has several strong points. It is a "Step into Reading" book that allows newly independent readers to experience reading success. It also contains two pages of stickers that encourage interactive play and creativity; half of the stickers that can be placed by a matching word in the book and to the rest are for use in creating a story about a trip for Arthur. In addition, it allows readers to understand that being truthful is good. Short chapters, easily recognized words, and fun illustrations blend together to make this a book that readers can enjoy time and time again. Keep it handy for students who like to have fun reading!
