We first met Nicolai Ostrovsky in Ms. McCabe's A Notorious Woman where he was the hero's mysterious best friend. I was delighted to learn he has his own story in this book. It begins in Venice 1525, when the infamous Emerald Lily fails to assassinate our Nicolai who is suspected of being a Russian spy. Two years later, our assassin, Marguerite meets Nicolai again in England. She is sent as a spy with the French delegation, and he is with the Spanish court as a guardian to his friend's mother. These two have delicious sizzling chemistry and I love the sparring matches, both with their wit and their blades! Of course, they soon discover they can not resist each other, and they become lovers. When someone makes an attempt on Marguerite's life, Nicolai suddenly realizes all that is at stake if he should lose her. If you love witty dialogue, edge sitting suspense, and smoking hot chemistry, you'll love this book! I'm looking forward to reading Balthazar's story next!
