This covers Newbery titles through 2009. A useful reference especially prior to start of Coretta Scott King Awards.
~40$, however you may be able to find used or through your regional library.

Wilkin's book investigates the evolving image of Africans and African Americans as portrayed in Newbery titles. The major part of the book provides a paragraph to page-length summary of each Newbery winner and honoree that mentions Africans or African Americans, emphasizing the attitude given about them, even when their presence is very limited. Wilkin notes how the groups have been treated more often and more positively over the years. She also marks those books that have "better" portrayals of Africans or African Americans (largely missing in early award years). A separate section reviews award books that only tangentially treat those groups. A final section briefly summarizes Newbery winners that did not treat Africans or African Americans. End matter includes an alphabetical list of Newbery authors, an alphabetical list of Newbery winners and honorees, and an index. This paperback offers a unique lens on Newbery books and sensitizes readers to changing cultural mores. --Lesley Farmer
