Teaching Composition: Background Readings
I reviewed Finn's Literacy with an Attitude: Educating Working-Class Children in their own Self-Interest, and I feel like the copying-and-pasting of the review for that book to this book is entirely apropos. For Finn's book, I wrote the following: "A pivotal book in my understanding of what it means to be in the position of "educator". Moreover, one of the essential pieces in helping me to understand my worldview openly and honestly. In part, my this book helped me to discover my true "voice" as a teacher".
"Aaron!" you cry. "But how do you account for Finn's book getting 5 stars, while Teaching Composition only gets 4 stars, if you simply copied-and-pasted the review? Simply speaking, Teaching Composition includes essays by both Lisa Delpit and Peter Elbow. Peter Elbow, in particular, is a God in the stars of pedagogy and writing theory and should be read by every practicing ELA teacher. Here, Elbow's genius shines amongst a plethora of above-par essays. Much of it is idealogical, as teaching should be, but there is also real evidence and statistics to back up many of the concrete theories proposed throughout. In short, this book is an essential tool in the toolbox of any ELA teacher, and some ideas here are both logical and necessary given the current state of our public education system.
