Archie Beckway is a powerful London politician at the height of his career. He's also a notorious womanizer whose antics have attracted a group of vicious blackmailers masquerading as cartoon characters. When Beckway turns to his friend Donovan, a somewhat benign crime lord angling for respectability and happy to do his high-placed friend a delicate favor, Donovan seeks out the services of Bobby Lennox, ex-boxer and occasional private eye, for some discreet nosing about. But the trail leads to unexpected conclusions, and perhaps even right back to Donovan's door, proving what Bobby suspected all along: that this affair is serious - and deadly.
