This anthology was first produced by Margaret Knight in 1961. She was a renowned humanist and psychologist who did much to promote humanism in the 1950s and 1960s. This revised edition contains many new extracts and a new preface from Edward Blishen. Jim Herrick, who edited the revised version, is editor of the New Humanist and the International Humanist News. The anthology aims to give the sweep of humanist thought from the ancient world to the modern era. Knight was interested in depicting the Stoic and Epicurean traditions, the writers of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, and writers of the 19th century rationalist tradition.
