The Ethiopian Revolution: War in the Horn of Africa
Covers part of the military history of Ethiopia under the Derg (1977-1992), specifically three episodes in the long, bloody conflict with its major enemies: The Somali War (1977), The Eritrean War of Independence starting with the Battle of Nafka (1982) and ending with the Battle of Massawa (1990), and the decisive Battle of Shire (1989) where the insurgent Tigray People's Liberation Front defeated the army of the Derg.
This book is based on open access to the Ethiopian military archives, providing an unprecedented degree of detail on a conflict badly known outside of the Horn of Africa. Despite the author's own biases -- he is a member of the Tigray ethnic group, who controlled Ethiopia at the time he researched this book -- he handles the subject matter objectively. The book's major drawback is that it only overs a few selected episodes of the Ethiopian Civil War, which leaves not only the rest of the Ethiopian Civil War, but the Eritrean War of Independence still badly known to Westerners. I look forward to other scholars working to fill the substantial gaps.
