Fallen Giants

This is an exhaustive history, compellingly told, of mountaineering in the Himalaya. It is particularly good at putting the climbers' struggles in the context of what was happening in the world during the different eras; first the explorations fueled by the British India corporations (the Raj) then on to nationalistic representation during the world wars and into the modern era of self-expression through mountain climbing that propels thousands annually to the 'Death Zone' and above. 500 pages plus, but gripping and educational.
