Houston Lost and Unbuilt
The premise of this book is spot-on. Houston does indeed have a preservation problem, and this book is a necessary reminder of overlooked pieces of our city's past. However, I had to dock a few stars because Third Ward and Fifth Ward are practically nonexistent. There were some great treasures in these communities in the early/mid twentieth century. I would really love to see some historians take the time to explore them deeply and consider them as important aspects of Houston, not separate unrelated entities. This is a personal gripe, of course. I'd still recommend this book to anyone interested in Houston history, as long as they understand there's a lot more to be learned.
