The Politics of Chaos in the Middle East
Just missed five stars. This is an excellent and compact book by an author who knows his field really, really well. Olivier Roy doesn't mess around -- in 159 sparsely written pages he describes:
o the various schools of thought (Neocon, Third-Worldist, Clash-of-Civilizations...) regarding the Islamic world today.
o the mistakes -- strategic and conceptual -- made by the US in its post-9/11 reactions.
o the real (as opposed to feared or imagined) groupings, movements, and fault lines in the Islamic world and how they came to be.
o the political structures in Iran and what might happen in the event of a US attack.
Basically, if you are looking for a concise and understandable summary of the Islamic world and its conflicts, both internal and external, then look no further. It's only weaknesses are that the translation from the original French is a little clumsy in places and, given how good it is, that it is too short. Should be required reading for every US voter.
