A charming new beginning reader created by David McPhail
A bit like the Dick and Jane readers that I remember, Dot and Bob are the stars of this story. Bob likes to dig, but sometimes he tries to dig a hole in an inappropriate place. Mom has a tree that she wants to plant and so she starts to dig a hole. It is hot and she and Dot take a break, but Bob who loves to dig just keeps making the hole bigger. It gets so deep that the tree practically disappears when it is placed in the hole. It really is not a problemBob is only too happy to replace some of the dirt that he dug out of the hole, and now the tree fits perfectly. The closing pages are labeled "Activity," but they are really questions to test comprehension. In addition, there is a spread about the author/illustrator whose drawings have a look of kids more than fifty years ago. A level 1 book in the "Green Light Readers" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
