Kim's dog, Chip, is lost in the big city. How will she find him? Maybe her new friends can help. . . .

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

Chip is an interesting looking dog. He is all black except for a big white circle around his left eye. The story is a familiar one. Kim has moved into a new house and has not yet made any friends. She and her Dad decide to take their dog Chip out for a walk. He bolts out the door and the chase is on. As they travel through the neighborhood they keep asking people if they have seen Chip. Pretty soon the Hot Dog Man, Park Worker and their neighbor Mr. Sanchez are all helping chase down the runaway dog. The good news is that Chip heads straight for his new home and Kim has met a few people in the neighborhood. The short, uncomplicated story is followed by a few pages of activities. The first one raises discussion issues. The second has kids creating a "friend"—a paper plate puppet. Then there is a brief description of the author and illustrator along with photographs of each. The closing spread provides tips to help children become readers and describes why the series is a good choice and lists other titles at this level. Part of the "Green Light Readers" series, a Level 2 book—reading with help with emphasis on short sentences, and simple dialogue. 2004, Harcourt, Ages 5 to 7.
