The book gets its stars for the quality of its illustrations - gorgeous reproductions of some of the most iconic cubist paintings intermingled with those of early twentieth century French couture. The text is another matter. Martin's thesis regarding the changes in women's fashions - that these changes were inspired by the impact Cubist works of art had on designers - is pure speculation for which he offers no real evidence. Though designers obviously did incorporate elements taken from this artwork into their fashions, the much more likely cause of their abrupt turnaround was the vast disruption in social mores that followed the cataclysm of World War I. The book is a faux scholarly work and not worthy of the Met Museum. Enjoy it for the pictures and skip the text.
