This updated second edition provides broad,basic coverage of techniques and preparations in organic chemistry,featuring exceptionally modern and extensive treatment of qualitative organic chemistry. It is the only integrated lab-text manual which provides a major discussion of qualitative organic chemistry and which utilizes modern experimental methods to execute the qualitative organic analysis portion of the book. This edition is expanded,reorganized,and updated with several new experimental procedures. The chromatography section is extended and now includes additional suggested experiments,with procedures ranging from the very inexpensive (paper chromatography) to the very sophisticated (gas chromatography). Other chromatographic experiments are provided in subsequent sections. This edition also features material on modern spectral techniques,including carbon-13 spectra; this coverage is fully integrated into the procedures in a realistic way (i. e. as the student would use the techniques in the laboratory). Other highlights of the text include treatment of Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions without benzene; an example of a Cannizzaro reaction; several examples of phase transfer catalysis,including a dichlorocarbene reaction; and a separate detailed chapter explaining why certain solvent systems are used in subsequent procedures.
