Join spunky Cat the Cat as she introduces the very youngest readers to her world, where a surprise is waiting in every book.
Set on a soft green background are Cat the Cat and friends as they happily prepare for a tea party. As the characters all help with the preparations, Cat approaches each one to learn its sound. Cat asks Hound the Houndabout his sound, and Hound responds with woofs. Cat poses the same question to Chick the Chick, who answers with a peep, Cow the Cow, of course, replies with a moo. An awkward situation comes up, however, when Cat asks Bunny the Bunny, who has no response. Bunny is embarrassed. The characters seem to realize that not everyone is the same, and they resolve the situation by accepting the differences with a group hug for Bunny. This simple story line moves toward a quick resolution to a conflict. Young children will enjoy recognizing the animal characters and sounds that they make. What's Your Sound, Hound the Hound? follows the format of a basic animal-sounds book, as Cat the Cat asks various animals what sounds they make. This portion of the book has a good amount of repetition and humor, and children will enjoy saying the animal sounds along with the book. When she gets to Bunny the Bunny, though, the book changes direction, as what sound does a bunny make, anyway? Instead of resolving this question, the book focuses on the animals comforting Bunny the Bunny, which will leave readers satisfied nonetheless. The art is simple and expressive, inviting children to draw the animals as they practice their animal sounds. The reviewer states, "Vibrantly colored digital art delivers the clean, animation-like style that fans expect while packing a lot of narrative and expressive punch. This book is the cat's meow." Fans of Mo Willems and new readers alike should enjoy this book, and it should be suitable for all readers.
