Life is tough in Berk and the Vikings main enemies are dragons. The village men head off to fight the dragons, leaving the teenagers behind to train and protect the village. There are various kinds of dragons. Gronckles, that eat rocks and turn them into lava balls, are great flyers but cannot make fire if their heads are wet. The Terrible Terrors are very small dragons, but they can shoot deadly flames. The Deadly Nadder can not only shoot fire, but it can shoot darts from its tail. The only problem it has is a blind spot. The most dangerous dragon is the Hideous Zippleback; it has two heads, one that breathes gas and the other that ignites it. Hiccup is a Viking, but he is a bit of an outsider. He likes to invent and think about things. One day he injures a dragon with his new invention. Eventually, he finds the wounded dragon and they become friends. Once he learns how to ride the dragon he named Toothless, he eventually convinces one of his friends that not all dragons are bad. The full-color illustrations look like scenes from the movie. For parents there is a note at the front of the book with suggestions for using this Level 2 book in the "I Can Read!" series.
