Review # 1 was written on 2010-02-08 00:00:00 Stephen Simmons I won this book in Goodreads. It was my first one, and I must admit that at its reception, more than 2 months later (french postal service, you s**k), I wasn't really excited about reading it. I must explain: it was a gift, from a site I just had discovered, from an author pretty unknown, and you could find the book for free in the net. To be honest, some free books are unfortunately just not good enough, and full of misspelings. And, maybe the most important thing, it was about two boys and the Virgin Mary, who appeared to one of them... I have to admit I have not been raised into this religious stuff, and although I know and respect it, I wasn't sure to be able to appreciate a novel which I feared was an apology or at least too much about it. But, finally I took it from the shelve one sunday afternoon I had nothing else to read at home, and I HAVE LOVED IT. I read it in just three days, not able to stop reading until 4 in the morning. The author describes wonderfully how life was in a medium-class american neighbourhood in the 70s; the two main characters' personalities are richer than you will usually find in most of the NYT bestsellers; the scenario, how the friendship between these two characters remains along their lifes, in spite of what differentiates them (which grows more and more...), is great; etc. Just a last word, the English language used by the author is delicious. No misspellings at all, and very rich. So my idea about free books has changed again. Thanks! |
Review # 2 was written on 2010-02-16 00:00:00 Gus Ledoux I won this book through the Goodreads First Reads. This was the first book I won that I was super excited to receive. I typically read more then one book at a time. This ended up being my bath & bedtime reading material. That ended up being appropriate, cause I took my time with it. I'm not one to reiterate the plot. The story was terribly engrossing. I felt drawn into the character's lives. I became really comfortable with them. I was very interested as to what would happen. Every night, it was hard for me to tear myself away from the book. I'd stay in my bath til the water got cold or end up staying awake longer then I planned. When I finally finished it, I felt quite sad to have left their world. Doug Lambeth is an excellent writer. I look forward to reading more of his work. |
