5 FATALE ATTRACTIONS

EDITORIAL
Jenny and I returned to Los Angeles to spot some property. Guess what's still
the big buzz?-TITANIC. Corporate Hollywood is in awe of the film because it's
a cash cow. Even worse, the public can't wait for the film to be re-issued so
they can pay for the privilege of viewing restored footage. Jenny heard a rumor
that "someone" is covertly shooting additional sequences that will be
camouflaged as "lost scenes" (thus precipitating some last-minute casting,
e.g. Jerry Lewis, as the ship's nutty telegraph operator, whose incompetence sinks
over 1,500 passengers). Before subscribing to director James Cameron's "bigger
is better" extravagance, sample some sumptuous visions filmed on very restrained
budgets (a fraction of the average Hollywood power lunch): Kathryn Bigelow's NEAR
DARK, Cindy Sherman's OFFICE KILLER and Linda Hassani's DARK ANGEL. Next subject—
Seven years ago, Cinefantastique magazine begot Femme Fatales. Well, keep watching
the newsstands for another CFQ spin-off: Animefantastique. The editor, one very
cool Dan Persons, is profusely covering "world animation," which encompasses
everything THE LITTLE MERMAID to PRINCESS MONONOKE (note to Dan: how about a behind-the-scenes
chronicle of THE SIMPSONS' Treehouse of Horrors episodes, 1990-'97? Ditto UPA's
abstract, 3-D animation of Poe's TELL-TALE HEART [1953]? And, in the CD medium,
how about Tomb Raider, Lara Croft?).
So why would Animefantastique appeal to FF readers? Because the more eminent cartoon
characters are femmes fatales. Check-out forthcoming Anime issues for articles
devoted to the likes of Aeon Flux, Poison Ivy and other ravishing renderings,
some of which made the transition to flesh & blood embodiments (note to Dan:
how about an expose of Jessica Rabbit? I mean, Disney theme parks still prohibit
the sale of Jessica-related merchandise. "She's too sexy for Walt,"
explained a clerk.).
See you next month. Right now, it's sake for me, Diet Pepsi for Jenny.
