THE SLEUTHSAYER
"In the past few years," Playboy recently opined, "lesbianism has gone from being a minor subplot in porno movies to becoming the hottest pop-culture movement since MTV Unplugged. Lesbians aren't merely accepted, they're in demand." And so, by popular demand, we present our sapphic sequel, "Woman 2 Woman."
Speaking of Sappho, the 6th Century B.C. poet born on the Greek isle of Lesbos was recently selected as number 61 in the book, The 100 Most Influential Women of All Time—just 5 slots behind Joan of Arc and 5 ahead of Anne Frank! One of the few surviving poems by the so-called "Mother of All Dykes' begins: "May you sleep on the breast of your tender companion," and there seems no shortage of famous femmes eager to jump on, uh, the bandwagon: "How can men not be fascinated with the fact that two women have this very cryptic beautytogether?" asks uncloseted crooner k.d. lang {see p. 64}. "It's extremely erogenous and sensuous. I think that straight women fantasize about it, too."
Such as Bound babe Gina Gershon {p. 32}, who asserts: "I'd be really proud to be the poster girl for lesbianism," or man-eating mannequin Janice Dickinson, who Sly-ly says: "I love lesbians, they get a bum rap. What's a little lapping between friends" flap up a whole sextion of her "Bisexual Chic" model mates, beginning on p. 46}. Paying lip service to the "in thing" this year were: actress Amanda Bearse {"I was a teenage lesbian thespian"); singer/actress Cher {"Yeah, I have had relationships with women when I was younger"}; and singer/stacked-tress Dolly Parton {"I'm not the least bit gay—but my girlfriend is"}.
Indeed, what once was considered "no laughing matter," is now on the fast-track laugh track: "I logged on the Internet as a lesbian once," jokes Jon Lovitz. "The lesbian chat rooms are pretty fun—until you realize that every lesbian there is really a man trying to find a lesbian." Adds androgynous icon David Bowie: "I now expect to see Extreme Olympics with sky-diving, bungee jumping, and bisexuality as the three major events." Speaking of extreme, what do you call 100 heavily armed lesbians? Militia Etheridge.
We'll leave the last word to the woman who opens this issue—and who opened the issue of an openly lesbian lead on prime time—Ellen DeGeneres fp. 4}: "You've been in there forever," her flatmate yelled through the closet door as the opening line of her emergent episode. "Are you coming out or what?" Two years after we broke ground with our gay-la "Woman to Woman," Sleuth is coming out AGAIN...
