While trying to ask Uncle Pete to coach for the Peach Street Mudders, Zero discovers that he can throw a slider when there's a big bandage on his injured thumb.
After Zero seems to lose his pitch in a game against the Bearcats, things only seem to get worse. His coach is going on vacation and unless they find a replacement, they will have to forfeit three games over two weeks. And to top it off, Zero closes a car door on his finger and has to sit out the next game while he recovers. Zero is certain that his Uncle Pete would make a perfect replacement for his coach and while he practices throwing pitches while his finger is bandaged, he manages to throw a difficult slider. But he cannot throw the pitch again after the bandage is removed. While practicing his pitch he manages to regain his momentum and throws strike after strike during practice which gives him the courage to ask his Uncle Pete to stand in for the coach. This reprint of Christopher's short novel is a quick read that will appeal to fans of baseball. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
