In her book Your Career is an Extreme Sport, author Eileen Gunn likens a career to an extreme sport and uses principles of a sport - such as single-minded focus, psychological stamina and risk tolerance - to better oneself in their careers. The book is chock full of advice from those who have walked the path as well as daily tips and inspiration to head their way.

But more importantly, it is written with a specific focus for those from generation X and Y, who would more likely be carving out a career for themselves rather than plodding along the corporate ladder. More than just a step-by-step guide, it urges readers to rethink their careers and develop the attitude for this long but could-be-exciting journey as well.

Eileen Gunn is an experienced journalist who has written for publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Glamour among many others. Your Career is an Extreme Sport is her first book.

The most extreme sport I participate in is the nightly race with my dogs to see who gets the lion's share of the bed, so I wasn't sure how this book would work out for me. It's stellar. For anyone who's starting a business or beginning a career, it's got a great breakdown of advice and tips. My only complaint was that I wish she'd been more specific about the kind of hardships these business owners endured. It's great to say, "So and so is now CFO and he used to live on $500 a day," but I was kind of hoping for some stories on how hard they had to struggle and how they overcame failure in order to succeed. Still, that's a minor point. This book is definitely worth the read.
