"Proverbs are among the oldest poetic works in Sanskrit, Hebrew, the Germanic and Scandinavian languages. In Africa, too, they have been used for many centuries to convey ancient truths. However, African proverbs were not handed down in written form as in the formal tradition. By word of mouth they were passed on, from mother to child, generation after generation - reflecting and reinforcing communal values, a unique lifestyle, a specific natural environment." Xhosa Proverbs is Kwela's second offering of indigenous African wisdom as expressed in proverbs. The first was Ellen K. Kuzwayo's African Wisdom - A personal collection of Setswana proverbs. The ninety proverbs in this book reflect Zolile Calana's personal favorites.
