In this participant-observer ethnography, McAllister (anthropology, U. of Canterbury, New Zealand) analyzes the beer drinking rituals among the Xhosa of South Africa. He utilizes performance theory's concept of the social drama and practice theory's concepts of habitus and field—respectively formulated by Victor Turner and Pierre Bourdieu—in order to explore how the beer drinking rituals, with their performative practices of beer allocation, are used to respond to changing economic and political realities by negotiating relationships, pursuing economic and political goals, competing for power, and reproducing and contesting ideological representations of social order and authority opposed to the principles of apartheid and capitalism.
