Unclear and Present Danger Book

Solange Montgomery and Ali Marks are dating and madly in love. Ali is an Arab-American cop in New York City. Since the Iraq War there is constantly an undertone of mistrust in the New York City Police Department. Despite Solange's disapproval Ali takes a job in Florida in order to attend sniper school, because that was a dream he and his deceased father had for him. He and Solange date long-distance and things fall apart. Solange gets involved in a relationship through internet dating and she is almost date raped. Ali returns to New York and a grateful Solange sinks back into his arms. Their relationship blossoms and they plan to marry, but then Ali's family from Iraq comes to visit and the close relationship that Solange had with his mother, Anya, dissolves. Anya seeks acceptance from her relatives because they never forgave her for marrying a black American soldier who was stationed in Iraq. Ali is caught in the middle between his fiancée' Solange, his mother, and intolerant relatives that he has no real relationship with. Solange and Ali break up once more but are reunited at the end of the novel when Solange is held hostage by a former employee who is angry that she fired his mother. Ali the sniper saves her.
