The Appearance of Truth: The Story of Elizabeth Canning and Eighteenth-Century Narrative
As I tried to better comprehend Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure in my latest encounter with the book (Victorian board discussion), this study by Elvy was one to which I turned.
I found it useful to see the attention she paid to certain aspects of the novel and of Hardy's writings -- what did she notice that I had just sort of slipped over. She also reinforced my sense that certain elements for comprehending Sue Brideshead in the story simply are not supplied to the reader by Hardy. If/when I reread Jude, I may very well return to this study as well.
Elvy provides a recommendation that I might also see if I can track down: The Sense of Sex: Feminist Perspectives on Hardy by Margaret R. Higonnet. A Goodreads colleague suggested adding more criticism reads to my reading oeuvre. Since I generally have found aspects of Jude, especially the character of Sue Brideshead, rather incomprehensible, this seemed a good place to give the advice a try.
