Children's Literature

The introduction explains that it is easier to learn the words when you think about them as grouped into families. This particular book has words from three different word families that change as you flip each page. Quack is followed by shack, and as we turn the page we see Jack and on the opposing page a sack so now we have quack shack and sack on a jack only this jack is not a boy but a lifting device. The next selection of words belongs to the ick family so we have a chick looking at a girl who is licking an ice cream cone. Next we see Kitty who is kicking and then a sad boy who is sick in bed. The last group is the ock family. There is a lock and a block followed by a boy who is rocking facing a purple sock so locks rock and socks rock and that about does it. The final page lists the three families and the words that are used in the book. When young readers complete this book they will have learned 28 words. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
