Fascinating! Plutarch's 46 Parallel Lives -- biographies of statesmen, orators and soldiers presented (mostly) in pairs of one Greek and one similar Roman -- may be Plutarch's most popular works; but his other 60 or so extant works, the Moralia or Moral Essays, aren't too shabby either.
The dialogue-structured essays in Volume XII of the Loeb Classical Library edition include these compelling titles: "Concerning the Face Which Appears in the Orb of the Moon"; "On the Principle of Cold"; "Whether Fire or Water Is More Useful"; "Whether Land or Sea Animals Are Cleverer"; "Beasts Are Rational"; and "On the Eating of Flesh". For me, "Whether Fire or Water is More Useful" and "On the Eating of Flesh" were Plutarch's weakest efforts. "Concerning the Face Which Appears in the Orb of the Moon", "On the Principle of Cold" and "Whether Land or Sea Animals Are Cleverer" held my interest throughout. The gem-by-far of the collection is "Beasts Are Rational", where a young Plutarch has Odysseus being schooled by a pig on whether animals or humans exhibit greater virtue. Let's just say us humans don't exit the exercise looking so good.
Really, even the mediocre essays are deserving of a close read. Readers accustomed to philosophical inquiry will have fun with this collection.
