This is the second of three volumes containing the monumental collection of prayers, meditations, religious poetry, and biblical extracts compiled by a London gentleman for the edification of women. Divided into seven sections called lamps (a reference to the biblical image of the seven wise and foolish virgins and their lamps), the fourth of the so-called lamps is printed in this volume in facsimile of the original 1582 text. It consists of prayers for every occasion, such as Sundays, feasts days, good harvest, and times of plague. The editors provide a brief introduction. The facsimile volume is neither annotated nor indexed. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
