Making Better Places: The Planning Project in the Twenty-First Century
Rise of the Community Builders demonstrates the impact of real estate firms that created subdivisions, "community builders," and their role in the industry and particularly urban planning. Many of the tools used to create and maintain subdivisions, lot size and minimum housing construction costs, and other restrictions later became accepted as good urban planning. This also included racially restrictive covenants. He focuses on changes with the Los Angeles Realty Board and the California Real Estate Association, demonstrating how these case studies really impacted real estate nationally.
What i appreciate most about this text is the archival excavation. He unearths some "forgotten" planning documents and sources to weave this narrative. Most helpful for my own research is his investigation into what realtors said themselves. He utilizes publications like CREA's "California Real Estate" (magazine) and even the League of California Municipalities' "Pacific Municipalities." He also utilizes proceedings from national and state Conferences of City Planning.
Great resource for identifying sources, in the same way his 1986 case study on Berkeley lifted up sources about residential segregation in Berkeley.
