Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Writings Book

I heard about Bret Harte years ago when reading a run-down of western fiction, so figured I would give this a shot. All the stories are short ones, ten pages being around the average, and the max. This stuff was written in the 1800's, so be prepared for the writing to be a bit different-this is not Louie L'Amour.
Overall, it is good stuff. The writing was solid, the author does a good job reflecting the language of the times, and these are just nice little snapshots of life back in the Old West. I know, Harte is mainly known for 'The Luck of Roaring Camp' and 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat,' but most of the other stories are quite good also. here are a few thoughts on some of them:
'Miggles' and 'Tennessee's Partner': to me, these two were the weakest, with the plot behind 'Partner' being the worst of the lot.
'The Idyl of Red Gulch' and 'Mr. Thompson's Prodigal': these two were really fun, the twist at the end of each story (especially in 'Prodigal') made them worth it. Good, fast stories with a well-laid out plot.
'The Iliad of Sandy Bar,' 'How Santa Claus came to Simpson's Bar' and 'An Ingenue of the Sierras': These were three of my favorites, especially 'Iliad.' The story of a long-standing feud between two former friends, for reasons that no one knows, was hilarious fun-the way they kept one-upping each other made me laugh with each of their stunts. That one was as strong as, if not stronger than, the 'Outcasts of Poker Flat.'
There are a few other stories, this is just to give you an opinion on the majority of them. Worth reading, and the beauty of short stories is, if you don't like one, you can always skip ahead to the next one.
