I've read many books about the group of 5 that met at the Villa Diodati in June 1816, but this has to be the best.
Claire Claremont has been so often disregarded and dismissed by cultural historians as a mere groupie and burden for the rest of them. However this work shows her to be an intelligent and independent woman when such women were scarce. A gifted linguist and musician, who enabled the journey across Europe, who was muse and inspiration to them, and who survived them and their tyrannies to lead a full and fascinating life. She maintained a dignified silence (rate then as now) to protect their memories, despite knowing that she was being written out of history. So pleased that someone has done her memory justice. Well written and a flowing read.
