Great Irish Stories of Childhood
[Canyon Walls by Zane Grey. Grey has a bad habit of setting up good masculine cowboy characters, and then having them fall prey to infatuation with females of various levels of worthiness. The teenage girl in this one is not worth the effort and is in fact quite annoying and immature. I found the ending trite and not fulfilling the sense throughout the story that there would be a reckoning coming.
Blacksheep by Max Brand. Nice setup of a feisty female Tom Sawyer/ Huckleberry Finn character. I'd like to see her in a novel-length story if he could have put her in a more interesting plot.
The Sixth Shotgun by Louis L'Amour. The best-written of the three, it's still mostly forgettable though it does have a witty ending. (hide spoiler)]
