Organized in May 1863 and later renamed the Veteran Reserve Corps, the Invalid Corps consisted primarily of veterans with disabilities who performed a number of functions such as enforcing the draft, patrolling the streets as provost marshals, and guarding prisoners and supplies. Freelance writer and researcher Fred Pelka presents an edited collection of some 143 letters written by Colonel Charles F. Johnson (1827-1867), describing his initial experiences in the battlefields and then his day-to-day life as part of the Invalid Corps, which offer a unique insight into the experience of disability in 19th-century America. The letters are supplemented by Pelka's detailed introduction and annotations, describing the history of the Invalid Corps and providing background information on Johnson.
