There are many good books in circulation regarding Pentecostal history and most of them will be referred to in this work. However, they all seem to assume prior knowledge or understanding of what Pentecostalism is about. This book seeks to rectify this by giving a brief but detailed account of Pentecostal history and the main players within it.
It begins with a look at what Pentecostalism is all about and its particular emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. It continues with an outline of what fed into the Pentecostal movement from preceding generations of Christian leaders and their experiences. This hopefully sets the scene for the main section of the book.
The main thrust of the work centres on three leaders who, propelled the movement forward. They are William Joseph Seymour, Thomas Ball Barratt and David du Plessis. Seymour was an Afro-American who brought the Pentecostal experience to the attention of the American public through his own magazine, Apostic Faith, and through reports in the secular press. Seymour's magazine went on to influence a minister from Norway, T. B. Barrat, who in turn brought the message of Pentecost to Europe. Almost singlehandedly these two men influences two continents through their preaching, writing and personal encounters with others. Some years later the movement was propelled forward in another direction through the efforts of a South African minister, David J. du Plessis, who helped bring the Pentecostal experience into the historic churches and thereby the Charismatic movement was born.
These men, however, would not be seen by Pentecostals as the founders of the movement but significant and influential figuresin the development of the Pentecostal revival in the world yet controversial for all that.
