Discusses the physical characteristics, habitat, and behavior of penguins, unique warm-blooded birds.
Gr 2-4-High-quality, full-color photographs and an attractive format will quickly engage young readers' interest in this general introduction to penguins and their habits. Basic facts about anatomy, food, enemies, and young are presented in both text and accompanying photos. Although the pictures are excellent, detailed information about them is listed in the back of the book instead of in captions-an awkward arrangement for children. Also, the author occasionally anthropomorphizes the birds' behaviors. The section on "growing up" does not mention the age at which most species reach adulthood. No mention is made of penguins' vulnerability to oceanic pollution and human disturbance of nesting sites. Mary Ling's Penguin (DK, 1993) also presents simple facts, but is intended for younger readers.-Barbara B. Murphy, Shaler Area School District Libraries, Pittsburgh
