American Gothic Fiction (Continuum Introductions to Literary Genres)
Introduces the main themes of American Gothic lit. The first few chapters are great, full of thought-provoking ideas (mostly gleaned from elsewhere). As for the rest of the book, it would be helpful if you've read a lot of American Gothic fiction, which I haven't.
What I like most about books like this is that they give you the ingredients to write a story in a specific genre. I realized reading this book that a lot of my stories have Gothic elements in them, and I think it's helpful to know that. It's good to know what kind of gun you're shooting with so you know what ammo to put in.
