Secrecy, Magic, and the One-Act Plays of Harlem Renaissance Women Writers Book

This book is short, only 100 pages. I thought it was going to be 100 pages, discussing deeper meanings and discussion then I could have picked up by reading the book myself. I just did read The Handmaid's Tale. The only thing in the beginning, is barely a sentence or two about renaming The Handmaids. The main character is Offred, and I did read that as Off-Red. Apparently, I must be on to something as this was mentioned as possibly done on purpose. I noticed soon that the characters were name after their Commander. Ofglen, is Of Glen. So, Offred is within the narrative, Of Fred. Amazing. Then for 79 pages, it was just a telling of each Chapter of the Book. Pretty lame; clearly meant for someone who had to read this book and did not want to (So Repressive!)

The last 20 pages, finally a short passage by Margaret Atwood is presented. An analysis by Barbara Enrenreich is interesting. A few more commentaries are given, one points out interesting idea about the older women, The Aunts chosen as the enforcers. This probably represents Extreme Radical Feminism. A tiny discussion that radical feminists and extreme right wing religions seem to have the same idea about women's sexuality. This may be repressive from both sides. So, for about 15 pages, I found some interest.

Basically, for cheaters who want the book and themes explained to them. There is nothing in this book to supplement the Handmaid's Tale. I read much more interesting interviews by Margaret Atwood on the Internet. She just forgot to spend almost an entire article to re-cap what she had written.
