Since 1936, the New Directions in Prose and Poetry anthologies have served as vehicles for the presentation of new and variant trends in world literature.

Publishers Weekly

Number 52 of this annual anthology of fiction, poetry and essays is largely a disappointment: its scope is small and its reach exceeds its grasp. With a few exceptions (Jerome Rothenberg, Gary Snyder, Henry H. Roth, Carmel Bird, John Frederick Nims), writers take minor exercise, and only an audience of groupies could approve. The aura is of a literary elite sending messages to members, from Michael McClure's fawning tribute to Robert Duncan (``Duncan saw the flowing universe of language, and he let that be the shape of his songs'') to the verbal gamesstating the obvious with the flourish due profundityof Richard Sieburth. Frederick Busch, who knows better, turns in a story, ``In Foreign Tongues,'' about the whining gossips in a therapy group; their patter is as canned as a TV laugh track. Elsewhere, literary gestures are made and ritual thanks paid to Coover, Cummings and other ``family.'' Most irksome is New Direction's courting of literary mannerism at the expense of substance, a step in the wrong direction for a distinguished venture. (Nov.)
