Melville. Bibles. What more could a literate person want? I'd been wanting to read this book ever since I first heard about it. Moby-Dick is perhaps the most profound novel ever written and Herman Melville knew how to take the Bible and make something completely other out of it. This is a wonderful treatment of Melville as a Bible-literate author and Pardes also does an admirable job of exegeting Moby-Dick as well as some other of Melville's works. The lion's share, or whale's share perhaps, of the attention is on his most famous novel. This book has intelligent things to say about American society and literature as well as the Bible itself.
