Job done.
When they executed women in the 17th Century there would often be a pamphlet published which would generally have a moralising address to the reader, an account of the crime and the execution and some sort of statement from the condemned. This book reprints eleven of these pamphlets.
There is also a one hundred page treatise by Staub which analyses the hell out of the phenomenon from a liberal feminist perspective. Unfortunately the treatise is academic and pedestrian, which is a shame because while the quality of the pamphlets varies considerably, some are very good.
'Newes from the Dead' is particularly interesting as Anne Greene actually survived her execution and 'A Hellish Murder' is just good storytelling as it unfolds through witness statements. Often the pamphlets are also interesting from perspective other than feminism - several of the women appear to have suffered a psychotic episode. Also, 'A True Discourse' has a dedication written by Robert Armin, who played the Fool in the original production of King Lear.
Much to enjoy. I recommend it to anyone who fancies reading something a little bit out of the ordinary.
