Reviewer:Mary J. Guenther, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This is the revised and expanded 4th edition of a thorough reference that will prepare its readers to manage medical emergencies caused by environmental encounters.
Purpose:The material is divided into 12 chapters, each of which is a definitive guide for a specific wilderness emergency. The CD presentation is clear and concise, appealing to a technically minded reader. At the same time it is loaded with illustrations and graphs that cater to the creative side of medicine. The end result is a resource that is invigorating to read and use.
Audience:According to the author, who is one of the leaders in the field of wilderness medicine, the primary audience is emergency, primary care, and military physicians. The easy to understand approach allows this CD-ROM to also reach a wider audience, including residents, medical students, nurses, EMTs and paramedics.
Features:Emergencies such as altitude illness, burns, bear attacks, cave rescue, animal bites, heat/cold illness, and marine hazards are covered. The CD-ROM format allows the reader to alter personal preferences like font size, page size, and reading speed. There are icons for timesaving shortcuts on the button bar located above the browser and map windows that take only a few moments to master. The installation is done with the simple click once the CD is inserted. A highlight is the search engine, which allows everything from simple searches to advanced Boolean searches. It is easy to then save and edit multiple queries. An added bonus is a seamless interface with the web using Internet Explorer technology that enhances many documents and maps by linking to the relevant websites. You can also use PubMed Abstract in the reference section of each chapter to access related articles. The only shortcoming is one which the general population will eventually overcome, the difficulty of extended reading on screen.
Assessment:This CD-ROM is an excellent reference loaded with technological advances not available in a book. The immediate ability to search an entire book of over 1,800 pages within seconds for a specific topic is outstanding. The fact that this edition ties itself to the Internet makes it an invaluable asset for emergency physicians who deal with environmental emergencies on a daily basis and need to stay up-to-date on the latest recommendations and literature.
