لم ÙŠØظ شيخ الØنابلة أبي الوÙاء بن عقيل ÙÙŠ دراساتنا المعاصرة بقدر واÙر من الØÙر ÙÙŠ Ø£Ùكاره والتنقيب عن طريقته الكلامية والÙقهية. ولم يتم تناول تاريخ Ø£Ùكاره وتغيراتها من قبيل «تاريخ الأÙكار»؛ للدرجة التي ينبغي أن يلقاها مصن٠أكبر كتاب ÙÙŠ التاريخ الإسلامي Øسبما تذكر بعض المصادر؛ وهو كتاب «الÙنون».
 رغم ذلك Ùليس هذا الكتاب عن ابن عقيل بقدر ما هو عن تطور الدراسات الإسلامية ÙÙŠ العصر الوسيط، مع العناية بتشابك هذا التطور مع الØالة الاجتماعية والسياسية ÙÙŠ Øاضرة العالم الإسلامي الكبرى ÙÙŠ ذلك الوقت.
تأتي هذه الدراسة، التي تصدر نسختها العربية عن مركز نماء، ليلقي من خلالها المستشرق الأمريكي المعرو٠«جورج مقدسي» على الأسس الÙكرية Ù„Ùكر العلامة ابن عقيل، معتمدًا على كتابي «الواضØ» و«الÙنون» وعددًا من الأعمال الأخرى التي استطاع مقدسي الØصول عليها مخطوطًا أو مطبوعًا.
سعى المؤل٠من خلال البØØ« رسم صورة للواقع العلمي والاجتماعي لعصر ابن عقيل، واعتمدها كصورة مصغرة للعالم الإسلامي ÙÙŠ بغداد وقتها، Øيث تتبع تشكلات عقيدته وتوجهاته ÙÙŠ ظل صراعات المتكلمين والمØدثين Øينها، ثم رصد آثار بن عقيل ÙÙŠ مجالي العلم والأدب، ÙˆØاول تقديم ترجمة متقنة وسرد Ù„Øياته وعصره، الذي أسماه عصر «الإسلام الكلاسيكي»، Ùضلًا عن تجاوز أثره الÙكري إلى الغرب.
هذه الدراسة هي خلاصة جهود مقدسي الØثيثة لتتبع كل ما يتعلق بابن عقيل الØنبلي على مدار سنوات طويلة من البØØ« والØر والدراسات الأكاديمية والتنقيب عن المÙقود والمخطوط والمنشور المنسوب له، ولذا كان Øرص مركز نماء على تقديمها للقارئ العربي.
