Wheat written by Inez Snyder

Wheat written by Inez Snyder

Introduces wheat, from the time it is planted in a field until it is made into different foods.

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

Set up like real reference books this series entitled "Harvesttime" is a subset of the larger series of "Welcome Books." In each book, young readers will find a table of contents, the text and accompanying pictures, a list of new words, along with their definitions, that were highlighted in the text, and a page with a few references to books and a web site to find out more on the topic. The final page contains an index and a very brief write-up about the author and the reading consultants who reviewed the text. The text is a compilation of declarative sentences some of which are a bit banal and don't really tell the reader much. Readers do learn that wheat is planted in fields, it is green first and then golden by the time it is harvested by machines which are not given their proper names and the wheat is stored in large bins (granaries or silos) "Wheat is used to make many different foods." does not tell much—a list or at least a picture of a variety of foods and not just bread might have gotten the point across better. The stock photos that fill each page are appropriate to the text, and very young and new readers will feel a sense of accomplishment having completed the straightforward text and looked at the photographs. 2004, Scholastic, Ages 3 to 6.
