The most obvious difficulty in responding to Yeat's work in the theatre as dramatist, aesthetician, and theatre manager is the sheer complexity of his vision. To a considerable extent, this complexity arose from a lifelong conflict that raged within him-a conflict compounded of contrary impulses pulling him at once towards a life of introspection and towards a life of action and engagement.
